The Adventure
The mission is the basic unit of adventures. A mission will have challenges that are designed to cost or exhaust the party's daily resources. Multiple missions make up a campaign. A mission is one covert entry with intent to steal, one base held against an assault, one bounty brought to justice.
Success or failure at a given mission will lead to other missions.
Usually, you obtain missions from a friendly NPC, or some faction hires out your services. Whereas before the promise of treasure or personal glory was all that motivated the characters (in general), the modern age brings about commissions and business. Succeed or fail, and usually you can still expect to get paid.
Each mission will have some briefing and debriefing sessions before and after the event itself. Pay attention to what your employer has to say, this might give you clues to other adventures, or help you discriminate the kind of faction you like to work for from the kind you don't.
