The functions of DM are these: Adventure Phraser: The DM creates the groundwork wherein your adventure can take place, including settings, important NPCs, factions, and dungeons. Narrator: The DM is your means of perceiving the game world. If you don't know where you are or what things look like, ask. NPC Behavior: The DM acts out or otherwise expresses all NPC dialog and actions. Monster Behavior: The DM makes all decisions for enemy combatants. Referee: The DM is responsible for applying relevant rules, as well as determining outcomes not explicitly covered in the rules.

The DM is not your opponent.
