Player Characters

As a player, you create a character (also called PC): a larger-than-life adventurer. This adventurer is part of a team that navigates through the stars, battles alien monstrosities, and explores the ruins of past (and current) civilizations. You, through this character, are the locus of the game's action.

Playing a character involves adopting a persona or decision-making scheme that isn't necessarily your own. It is more important to make a characteristic choice than an optimal one. There is also no such thing as a character without a motivation. Discuss with your DM what your character's motivations are, both secret and not. Your DM should provide you with options suitable to your character's goals, some of which will not line up exactly with the rest of your party.

But don't worry, they all have their secrets too. Try to guide the group's decision making toward your own goals while not directly interfering with theirs or making it too obvious what you're really after. The DM is sharing private messages with everyone all the time, so make sure you have something to say. Or even if you don't, say "hello" to keep up appearances.
